Staff Bios
Executive Director
Robert Hughes, originally from Cleveland, Ohio came as a teenager to San Mateo, California where he still resides. Robert graduated from San Francisco State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science/Education and received a Master’s degree in Public Health and Hospital Administration from Yale University.
After an extensive career in healthcare administration, Robert segued into the non-profit arena six years ago. Three years as Executive Vice-President of the Family Service Agency of San Mateo County solidified his desire and commitment to work with children and families. Robert comes to the Lewis and Joan Platt East Palo Alto Family YMCA having most recently served as the Associate Executive Director at the Palo Alto Family YMCA and prior to that, as the Executive Director of Youth Tennis Advantage, a non-profit committed to using sports-in combination with academic tutoring and life skills training-as a vehicle to inspire inner city kids in San Francisco and Oakland to excel in all areas of life.
Robert is excited to have the opportunity at the YMCA to continue service to children and families in such a meaningful way.
In his free time, Robert enjoys spending time with his wife Sharon and son Devon
Facility Director
Dave graduated from BYU with a degree in Botany and Zoology and in his younger days worked on a large sheep ranch. Dave's work experience includes working in the Silicon Valley as an electrician, plumber and service technician. Having served for many years as the Facility Manager at the Palo Alto Family YMCA, he most recently transferred to the new East Palo Alto Family YMCA as their Facility Director. When not working at the Y, Dave enjoys Tai Chi, hiking and hanging-out with friends and family.
Director of Administration
In 2000, Barbara graduated from San Jose State University with a Bachelor of Arts double major in Behavioral Science and Psychology and an Associate of Arts degree in Psychology. She has more than 10 years of experience in the non-profit sector providing direct and professional services throughout the Bay Area including work history with Seneca Center, Child Quest International, Emergency Housing Consortium (AKA EHC Life Builders), and the Victim Witness Assistance Center. Barbara joined the YMCA of the Mid-Peninsula’s Association Office as the Executive Administrative Assistant in March of 2005. In January 2007, she assisted with the Grand Opening of the Lewis and Joan Platt East Palo Alto Family YMCA and has since remained at this branch as the Director of Administration.
Youth and Family Director
Glenda began with the East Palo Alto Family YMCA in January 2005 as an After School Program Staff member, to After School Program Site Coordinator as well as In-School Fitness Coordinator. From January to June 2006 she worked as the Interim Health and Fitness Director and is currently the Youth and Family Program Director at the East Palo Alto Family YMCA..
Glenda is a retired Recreation Facility Manager with the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks where she spent more than thirty years at various facilities helping in the development and implementation of several key community programs. Her greatest accomplishment while in urban programming inside public housing was being the only public housing facility to receive ACA Camping Accreditation for the duration of her assignment. Her proudest moment was being awarded Director of the Year by the National Recreation and Parks Association .
Glenda has a degree in Community Service with a minor in Mental Health from Immaculate Heart College, Loyola Marymount, Martin Gang Institute Conflict Resolutions in Urban Environments and School Age Childcare Cal State University Northridge.
Glenda enjoys gourmet cooking as well as Cajun cooking (not Creole). She hopes to visit France summer/fall of 08. Glenda spends her free time with her family; one son, 32 nieces and nehews, 16 great nieces 11 great nephews and four great- great nieces, the greatest family ever.
Membership Director
Program Director
Laura Martinez started with the Lewis and Joan Platt East Palo Alto Family YMCA in December of 2006. She is currently the Program Director working with youth and teens. Laura has grown up in the city of East Palo Alto and is passionate about her community where she is very involved. She graduated from Whittier College with a B.A. in Sociology and minor in Spanish. During her free time she enjoys volunteering, coaching girl’s soccer and spending time with family and friends.
Associate Sports Director
Bruce started with the Lewis and Joan Platt East Palo Alto Family YMCA in August of 2006 and was promoted to Associate Sports Director in November of 2006.
Outside of the YMCA, Bruce is an assistant basketball coach at the Mid-Peninsula High School in Menlo Park. He also coaches a traveling basketball all star team. Aside from his work with the YMCA and coaching, Bruce enjoys playing basketball, tennis and spending time with family and friends.
