Hiking and Backpacking

Hiking with the YMCA community is a fun and rewarding experience. There are aerobic hikes, scenic hikes, beach hikes, forest hikes and much more. There are many benefits to hiking including toning muscles in the lower body, getting away from the daily grind and meeting interesting people. We think you will enjoy one of our outings with Van Whitis, our experienced hiking expert.

->Hiking essentials:

Footwear - Hiking boots with ankle support are good for walks on trails. Some athletic shoes are acceptable. Heavy socks with a synthetic liner help against blisters. For urban walks, supportive walking or athletic shoes are best. Speak to Van before the hike if you have a question about footwear.

Clothing - Use layers for different weather conditions. Synthetic clothing provides a good under layer for wicking perspiration. Cold days require fleece or sweatshirts with a wind breaker. Gloves and caps are optional. Rain jackets and hats work for wet days.

Sun Protection - Brimmed hats protect eyes and face from UV rays. Use sunglasses with UV protection. Sunscreen is important during months April through October between 10 AM and 3PM.

Food and Drink - Bring water along except on very short hikes. A break for a simple lunch snack may be specified and some will want to have a piece of fruit or other energy booster.

Carrier - Bring a small backpack or rucksack for water, food and extra clothing. Do not carry any items by hand due to the increased risk of injury from imbalance or falling.

All hikes start from the Palo Alto Family YMCA at 9:00 am sharp, once a month on a Saturday. The hiking schedule is on flyers in the lobby or on the hiking notice board in the West Hallway.
