Swimming Lessons
At the Palo Alto Family YMCA
it is never too late to learn how to swimming. Whether you
are eighty years old or a three year old beginner, there is
something here for you.
YMCA youth lessons
teach the basic fundamentals of swimming in a fun and nurturing
environment while building self confidence and an awareness
of water safety.

Parent/Child Classes: 6mths - 3 years
Infants and toddlers have
fun while parents learn to guide their child to a swimming
experience. Each skill is broken down into steps to ensure
each child can progress at their own pace. Lessons will
focus on the following skills: water adjustment, water
entry and exits, breath control, body positioning, arm
and leg action.
Preschool
Classes - 3 yrs - K
- PIKE (5 New Beginners to 1 instructor):
Children learn to put their face in the water willingly
while swimming on their front, back and side for ¼
of the pool. Boating and Getting Help are introduced
on the last day of the session.
- EEL (5 Beginners to 1 Instructor):
Children learn to use their arms and legs more effectively
while swimming on their front, back, and side ½
the length of the pool without floatation and with their
face in the water. Wetball (Water Polo) and Calling
911 are introduced on the last day of the session.
- RAY (6 Intermediate Beginners to 1
Instructor): Children learn to continue to improve body
position, use proper breath control and defined arm
and leg actions on their front, back and side a length
of the pool. In addition, they are introduced to the
breast stroke and elementary backstroke. Synchronized
Swimming and Throwing Assists introduced on the last
day of the session.
- STARFISH (6 Advanced Beginners to
1 Instructor): Children develop introductory strokes
- front crawl, backstroke, sidestroke, breaststroke
and elementary backstroke for 2 lengths of the pool.
Diving, Treading and Reaching Assist are introduced
on the last day of the session.

Youth Classes: 1st - 5th grades
- POLLIWOG (6 Beginners to 1 Instructor):
Youth learn proper body position, breath control and
kicking for front, back and side paddles for a full
length of the pool. Boating and Throwing Assists are
introduced on the last day of the session.
- GUPPY (7 Advanced Beginners to 1 Instructor):
Youth develop introductory strokes - front crawl, backstroke,
sidestroke, breaststroke and elementary backstroke for
2 lengths of the pool. Wetball (Water Polo) and Reaching
Assist are introduced on the last day of the session.
- MINNOW (8 Intermediates to 1 Instructor):
Youth develop front crawl with side breathing and over
arm recovery; backstroke with continous flutter kick;
sidestroke with a scissor kick; breaststroke and elementary
backstroke with symmetrical arm and leg actions for
2 lengths of the pool. Diving, Treading and Rescue Breathing
are introduced on the last day of the session.
- FISH (8 Advanced Intermediates to
1 Instructor): Youth develop front crawl and backstroke
with defined (s-sweep) pulls; the side stroke scissor
kick produces a glide; the breaststroke-timing is broken
down to a pull, kick, glide; and elementary backstroke
– produces a glide (for 2 lengths of the pool).
Synchronized swimming and Targeted Throwing Assist are
introduced on the last day of the session.
- FLYING FISH (9 Advanced to 1 Instructor):
Youth develop front crawl with bilateral breathing and
backstroke with open turns; lifesaving side stroke;
the breaststroke with flexed feet and open turns; and
the butterfly with dolphin kick using fins. Snorkeling
and First Aid (Bleeding and Choking) Skills are introduced
on the last day of the session.endurance and speed for
100 yards.
- SHARK (10 Stroke Swimmers to 1 Instructor):
Swimmers perform drills to help improve the four strokes
of the individual medley. Swimmers perform the individual
medley(butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke & freestyle
with starts and turns. Water Polo Medley and Rescue
Breathing are performed on the last day of the session.

Adult & Teen Lessons
Beginner (6 Beginners
to 1 Instructor): Participants develop introductory strokes
- front crawl, backstroke, side stroke, breaststroke and
elementary backstroke for two lengths of the pool.
Intermediate (8
Intermediates to 1 Instructor): Participants develop
the breathing,
pull and recovery of the front crawl; the backstroke's
body roll, flutter kick and pull; breaststroke's
symmetrical arm and leg actions with glide and introduction
to the butterfly for 2 lengths of the pool. |
Private & Semi Private Lessons
Private
and Semi Private Swim lessons are great for
those who are apprehensive about group lessons or are
looking
for more individualized lessons.
